Bremen, Feb. 3 2018. Concert, Matthäus Passion, Johann Sebastiani.

“For some years the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra, under the leadership of Paul O’Dette and Stephen Stubbs, has appeared regularly at the Sendesaal in Bremen and has always fascinated the audience with top quality performances. This year’s offering is no exception: at the end of a recording of Handel’s first opera Almira, Queen of Castilia, they presented a concert performance of the piece. The richness of the ever-changing colors and the brilliance of the performance made the more than three-hour-long performance fly by in no time at all.”

Bremen, Feb. 7 2017. Concert, Duets of Love and Passion by Agostino Steffani:

“Paul O’Dette and Stephen Stubbs, both meanwhile truly legendary leaders of the ensemble, and of the “early music scene” in general, and their four colleagues, presented Steffani’s fascinating music with joyful attention to its shifting textures and vivacious rhythms, which they sustained also in the instrumental interludes in works by Corbetta, Frescobaldi, Händel and Kapsberger.”

Klassik Heute, review of Charpentier’s La Descente d’Orphée aus enfers from 2016:

“And once again Paul O’Dette and Stephen Stubbs with their ensemble deliver an unusually rich and varied interpretation with a kaleidoscope of musical sounds and textures in which wonderfully poetic moments and dramatic accents alternate in an overwhelming impression of variety and precision. What an elegance in the individual contributions of the “flower-singers”, what a rhythmic presence in the performance of the individual short movements! What a gripping atmosphere in the death scene of Euridice or in the lamenting arias of Orpheus!”

Handel’s Messiah: Seattle, December 2015

“Under the dynamic conducting of Stubbs, the whole became a memorable performance, one not easily forgotten.”

Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers: Vancouver, November 2015

“Sometimes one comes away from a performance admiring all that has been put in place, yet somehow one does not feel the sheer ‘love’ of the conductor and the performers.  Well, here I felt the love!”

Bremen, Nov. 17 2013, Concert performance, Agostino Steffani’s Niobe:

“It may be unusual in an opera review, but here I would like to bring the instrumental achievement into the foreground: the “Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra” offered an unusually rhythmically precise way of playing, with obvious pleasure in highly accented phrases which was clearly based on the profound sonorities of the basso continuo group. One saw in this clearly how Paul O’Dette and Stephen Stubbs view the music of Steffani through the lens of his musical forebears rather than through that of the later high baroque style.”

Handel’s Messiah: Alabama Symphony, December 2013

“And coming from a conductor whose specialty is Baroque  opera, the drama was no surprise.”

Michael Huebner, All Alabama, December 2013

G.F Handel’s Il Trionfo del Tempo: Seattle, March 2012

“This was quite possibly the greatest performance not just of a Handel masterpiece but of anything that I have heard since moving to the Seattle area more than six years ago. To anyone that heard Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine conducted by Stephen Stubbs in Seattle’s St James Cathedral in 2010, I might perhaps need to say no more in justification of that large statement than that this performance of Handel’s first oratorio was on the same superb level of inspiration and execution-and yet it should be added that the singing, this time around, was even more thrilling and accomplished.”

Carissimi Oratorios: Prophets: Seattle, January 2012

“One of the hallmarks of Pacific MusicWorks is the quality of its performers. Music director Stephen Stubbs has an international reputation in the field of early music, as a lutenist and conductor of staged and unstaged performances, and he fields an international group of singers and musicians for his presentations.”

Claudio Monteverdi’s The Return of Ulysses, Seattle/San Francisco, March 2007:

‘The return of Stephen Stubbs to Seattle has reached a climax with the launching of his new company, Pacific MusicWorks. Those who witnessed the maiden voyage Wednesday night of Monteverdi’s opera, “The Return of Ulysses,” will be congratulating themselves for years to come.

Stubbs has been home from his star-studded career in Europe for a couple of years now, but those years have been building up to this project. And the staging of this particular opera is an event in itself. It comes from South African artist William Kentridge (who also has an exhibit at the Henry Art Gallery), and is directed by Kentridge’s frequent collaborator, Luc De Wit. It also employs the skills of the Handspring Puppet Company of Cape Town.
